Explanation of (Al Quran 2:286) "Allah burdens not a person beyond their scope..."

"Allah does not burden any human being with more than he is well able to bear..."[1] The best explanation to these words lie in the following Prophetic hadith when a man said: "O Messenger of Allah which of the people is tried most severely?" He said: "The Prophets, then those nearest to them, then those nearest to them. A man is tried according to his religion; if he is firm in his religion, then his trials are more severe, and if he is frail in his religion, then he is tried according to the strength of his religion. The servant shall continue to be tried until he is left walking upon the earth without any sins."[2]

The above hadith explains quite well the words of Allah ﷻ in the Quran that He does not burden a human beyond their capacity. Allah ﷻ only tests and tries each individual according to the level of their ability to bear the tests. This hadith teaches us a few but very important lessons:

  1. First lesson is that the Prophets are the most tested persons on earth and their example should always be referred to when any one of us faces any calamity. For instance any one whose child passed away should refer to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ example who had a total of 6 children of whom 5 died during his own life and he buried them with his own hands!
  2. Second lesson we receive is that no one faces trials as much as the Prophets which means normal persons will not undergo prophetic trials so if they are being tested they should know that always someone greater than them was tested severely.
  3. Thirdly, these tests are in accordance to the ability of each individual to bear them and that’s how each person experiences them, therefore one who is patient will definitely be able to overcome its consequences sooner or later. But the one who displays impatience, no one is to blame for their behavior but themselves, as continuation of such behavior would do nothing but makes things worst just as the hadith: “when a calamity strikes, a believer acts on the first instance as a disbeliever/hypocrite acts after a long time.”
  4. Fourth, these tests, whether difficult or lesser, are meant to make us stronger and purify us during our earthly lives so that our accountability in the hereafter is easier as even one day of the hereafter is seventy times worse than the difficulties of earth. It’s due to this reason a hadith states: “worldly life is a paradise for a disbeliever and a prison for the believer.”
